Computer Systems Analysts Technology Is More Understandable

Computer systems analysts specifically have educational backgrounds on computer science and management information systems. Software engineering makes these analysts a one of a kind. In order for an analyst to occupy a vacancy position in this occupation, he or she must possess great knowledge, skills and tools to answer all the possible problems a computer may reveal, internally and physically. What do these analysts do?

Just like any other typical computer employee, they assist you with your computer difficulties, or if you happen to come across any problems with your computer, they sure will analyze things for you and have them fixed in no time. Computer systems analysts are part of the information technology, they work in groups, you have the Computer support specialists and systems administrators, Computer and Information Systems Managers, Computer software Engineers and then the Computer systems analysts.

These computer systems analysts are a great help in the computer world. With great knowledge and skills, systems analysts are given the permission to resolve problems that has or may have affected computer hardware, software and other components of an association. They may also add new software if they think the recent software used does not any more meet the demand of consumers.

What makes their job a little off the heavy burden is, they can design and plan new system line of computers and also work out on other new ways on applying the continued resources of computer systems in any further added and upgraded programs. But a systems analyst does not only work in thinking of new ways in designing software and hardware; you will also find one or a few indulging their mind schemes in scientific, business, engineering, financial and accounting systems. There are other systems analysts are also associated with systems architects or developers.

Systems analysts cannot work by themselves alone. They will need the help of a great team that surrounds the same field of work. Analysts discuss the systems problems with the managers and consumers in order for them to get the real scoop behind the computers occurring problem.

Categorizing the possible solutions to resolve the problem, they secure procedural techniques just like a systems engineer does in attaining a perfect solution. They do a structural analysis, modeling of the data, extract engineering information sampling, and conduct a cost accounting to start the planning of the system. The next stop will be their discussion with the systems engineer who pretty well knows about detailed programming and designs.

Motor Boat Insurance

Motorboat insurance is a specific sort of boat insurance intended for owners of motorboats. It safeguards against destruction, burglary, fire, and additional hazards.

Coverage for motorboat insurance usually includes physical damage, property damage, fuel spill liability, towing, personal effects, medical payments, ski coverage, watercraft liability, and uninsured boaters.

Motorboats are the most popular among boat owners. But they also have the highest accident rates. Over time, motorboats have become more complicated, and therefore more costly. Reductions for motorboat insurance may be available if a person has a new boat or is an experienced operator.

Policies for motorboat insurance may have a number of necessities and limitations in regard to hull value, lay-ups, where and when a motorboat can be operated, and the age of a motorboat.

Boating protection should be taken seriously. The greater precaution one takes while operating a boat, the less prone an individual will be to a mishap.

Motorboats offer their owners fun and excitement. But before one begins to embark on water adventures, one should make certain to have proper motorboat insurance.

By and large, motorboat insurance covers objects such as anchors, batteries, bilge pumps, boat covers, deck chairs, depth finders, PFD's, lights, emergency devices such as EPIRBs, fire extinguishers, fuel tanks, boat furniture, generators, horns, life preservers, masts, mooring equipment, motors, engines, oars, refrigerators, seats, solar panels, stoves, ovens, tarps and trailers.

However, some of the following items are generally not covered, which include cameras or video equipment, clothing, jewelry, watches, as well as other personal items like cellular phones.

How To Build an Electric Car - A Basic Overview

Electric cars are one of the simplest forms of self-propelled motorized transportation. The engine or the driving mechanism of an electric car is made up of a series of batteries attached to an on and off switch that in turn is attached to an electrically operated motor.

Its the electric motor, which drives the wheels, thereby propelling the car into motion. Usually, all electric cars have a more complicated method to control the amount of electricity that goes into the motor and the gear system to help drive the wheels in a more capable manner. Some electric cars also have solar collectors that convert solar energy into electricity for slow recharge of the batteries.

But why bother with an electric car? Its because electric cars offer a singular driving experience, with excellent handling, as well as quick initial acceleration thanks to their low center of gravity. With almost continuous torque even at lower speeds, making it easy to climb curbs, steep inclines and sharp turns. Additionally, with the cost of conventional fuel increasing on a regular basis, using electrically charged cars makes for an ideal choice.

Making a basic electric car is fascinating and easy. Since, electric cars are very simple in overall construction; they can even be built by anyone. The main components are a simple frame, basic wheels, an electric motor, a car battery, and an electric on and off switch. You can build a simple electric car in about two weeks!

Although there is more to an electric car than was provided in this article, it is still easy to accomplish with a simple blue print, knowledge of electric currents and wiring, and the parts to put it all together.

Can Rock Fireplaces Provide A New Lease On Life?

They say that everything goes in cycles, but we can be thankful that some of the trends of the past have not made a comeback. Thankfully indoor fireplaces built from large boulders and faux rock are all but a distant memory. A lot of people remember having one growing up but no-one would dare admit to owning one now. Rock fireplaces are now making a come back, but not as you'd expect.

Attempts in the 60s to bring the outside in were remarkably flawed. While some of the theories behind the concepts were carefully considered, the execution left a lot to be desired. This is obviously easy to conclude with the aid of hindsight, and the same can be said about every decade. There were design concepts, equipment and trends, that we look at now and can only think - what were they thinking?

What has remained the same through the decades is the desire to incorporate aspects of nature into our built environment. We are constantly looking to improve the way we live, to connect with nature and blend our current concrete world with something more in line with nature. Over the last decade there has been a trend of opening up the house, blending the lines between inside and out. It is not so much about bring the outside in but making the outside more accessible.

Rock fireplaces have found a niche market in the outdoor entertaining area. With the advances that have been achieved in fireplace manufacture people are no longer restricted to having a fire inside. They can comfortably build an outdoor recreation area including heating, while incorporating elements of nature in the design without adversely affecting the interior design of their home.

Through this market, true rock fireplaces have the capacity to reach an entirely new market demographic. As these fireplaces are considerably smaller in area than an entire room wall they can be built more cheaply. Having said this, rock fireplaces are still the most expensive kind of fireplaces to create. This is predominantly due to the type of construction processes required.

Rock fireplaces have a distinct advantage when it comes to design. No two fireplaces will look the same after construction. Due the size of the rocks, the colors in the stones and the method of construction, it is impossible to identically recreate a rock fireplace.

This makes rock fireplaces artworks in the back yard, items that visitors will be impressed and inspired to emulate. For this reason it is important to choose rocks that will complement the design of your yard. The idea will be for the fireplace to be a feature amongst other natural components.

While you could still create a rock fireplace in your home if you desired, the tastes of most people dictate that they will be relegated to outdoor areas. There are some exceptions though, such as remote country cabins. The move outdoors for these fireplaces is fitting given the inextricable links with nature and the continued connection between indoor/outdoor living.

An Introduction To Thatch Roof Design

Thatching is a craft that is traditionally handed down from father to son, taking many years to perfect. It is not normally taught in other ways. So there is relatively little documented information. In South Africa there is evidence that many home owners and potential home owners would welcome such information.

Because thatching is a labour intensive process, the cost of a thatched roof is normally up to 60% higher than that of a conventional roof. This price difference can be limited, however, by using the roof space efficiently, with dormer windows and a mezzanine level for instance where the walling and plastering costs will be less. The insulating properties are very good, keeping the home warm in winter and cool in summer. Although thatch is one of the oldest building materials, modern, innovative laying techniques ensure that the interior finish is clean, with no loose pieces hanging down to harbour insects or encourage spider webs.

Thatch has a natural ability to free-curved shapes to create a warm, informal finish that blends in well because of its natural appearance. Thatch, being a natural material, will mellow in colour from its original fresh straw to a dark sheen that tones in wonderfully with the South African outdoors. At the same time, the rustic roughness of textured thatch inside the building lends itself to co-ordination with other natural materials such as stone & wood etc.

The high open ceilings in thatch roofed homes give the rooms a spacious, airy feeling that can be followed through with large window openings, and perhaps stone or slate floors to add to the rustic ambience.

MATERIALS

Thatching makes use of materials that are naturally available - grass or reed. In South Africa certain indigenous grasses are normally used. There are coarse varieties of this grass, with stalk thicknesses greater than 4 mm, that are not considered suitable for thatching. Natal thatching grass has a finer texture than the Transvaal grass when laid and is often preferred for this reason. The stalks of thatching grass are normally hollow and about 3 mm thick. Dekriet stalks, however, are solid and about 3-4 mm thick and considered the best quality and therefore the most expensive.

DESIGN

A thatched roof should have a minimum pitch of 45 and min 35 over dormer windows. Take advantage of the steep pitch to provide accommodation in the roof space to make the design more cost effective. Try to keep a thatched roof as simple as possible, but the ability of thatch to adapt to free curved shapes to develop a less formal plan could be implemented.

Consider flashed areas; features that penetrate or interrupt the roof should be avoided as far as possible. Chimney shafts should be designed to penetrate the roof plane at the ridge, thus avoiding the necessity of back flashing.

Soil vent pipes are best located on external walls so that they penetrate the thatch near the eaves line.

Rain water must not be allowed to discharge from a high level roof onto a thatched roof at a lower level.

Thatch, 150 mm thick, has a mass of about 20-25 kg/m2. The roof framing normally consists of eucalyptus poles that have been chemically treated. The poles may be spaced up to 900 mm apart. But Building Societies in South Africa will usually insist on a maximum spacing of 700 mm and a minimum pole diameter of 100 mm.

The grass that is used to form the ridge capping is thinner, softer and more pliable than that used for the main roof. The lower edges of the ridge capping may be trimmed to a decorative profile with chevrons or scallops. Alternatives to grass ridges are often used, the most common being preformed fibreglass, sheet metal and cement. The ridge is the most vulnerable part of a thatched roof and particular care must be taken to ensure that this feature is absolutely watertight.

Thatched roofs are constructed with dripping eaves; meaning rainwater gutters and downpipes are not provided. Eaves overhangs should be at least 650mm and provision should be made at ground level, around the building, to prevent erosion due to water dripping from the eaves overhang.

DURABILITY

A thatched roof will normally last for about 25 years if properly laid. Dekriet will typically last a little longer, up to 35 years. A thatch roof ridge require renewal every 4-6 years.

CONS & PROS OF THATCHED ROOFING

Advantages
As local materials always tend to harmonize with the landscape surrounding their place of origin, thatch, as a natural material, will always blend well with a rural environment.

There is an ecological advantage to be gained by using thatch in that it is produced by natural processes that do not use scarce and expensive resources of energy.

A thatched roof will ensure that a building will be cool in summer and warm in winter.

Disadvantages
Thatched houses are more vulnerable to fire risk than those covered with other materials, and it is therefore imperative that precautions be taken to reduce the risk.

Being an organic material, thatch is susceptible to decay and decomposition, and precautions must be taken to minimize the possibility of this process taking place

More expensive than conventional roofing.

Maintenance intensive.

FIRE PROTECTION

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Lightning protection
Lightning conductors should be installed to protect the thatched buildings, in accordance with the SABS Code of Practice.

Two avoid an excessive high mast, two masts or a spike on a chimney can be installed if the roof is not covered by the protection zone.

Chimneys
Chimney stacks should be constructed in such away that the outer faces in contact with the thatch do not become hot. A full brick thickness (220 mm) is normally sufficient.

All mortar joints in the stack must be properly filled.

The top of the stack must extend to at least 1m above the highest point of roof.

Install a spark arrestor, consisting of a piece of stainless steel wire mesh, fitted 700 mm from the top, covering the full width of the flue.

Basement Waterproofing Solutions

Basement flooding is a major problem for many homeowners. Although waterproofing your basement may initially seem expensive and perhaps even unnecessary, keep in mind that in most cases, repairing damage caused by water will cost more than waterproofing your basement.

Insurance
Standard insurance policies do not always cover basement flooding. If you live in a high risk area, purchasing full coverage insurance against flooding should be considered. Keep a detailed inventory of the contents of your residence and take photos of the rooms as it will prove extremely valuable in the event of a flood or major water leak.

Make sure your insurance policies and related records are in a safe location and easily accessible should the worst happen. Too often, homeowners will keep their valuables in a safety box that they store in the basement, which is usually the first part of a house to be flooded.

Basement waterproofing 101
Surprisingly enough, many home foundations are not waterproofed. Because concrete absorbs water, moist earth around an unprotected foundation will cause dampness in a basement. Basement waterproofing will not only prevent humidity, but will also protect your home's foundation, a critical step in maintaining your home's value, as well as an important measure in preventing serious water damage.

Basement waterproofing is generally not recommended as a do-it-yourself project. This is one task best left to reputable professionals; moreover, insurance companies may refuse to pay a flooding claim if your waterproofing was not done by professionals. Ideally, basement waterproofing should be done during the construction stage.

Some temporary solutions
A common foundation waterproofing method used by homeowners is the application of black tar; however, it is not recommended as it is a short-term solution. It will dry out, crack and allow seepage within five to eight years. Tar can be effective as a damp-proofing method, but it is not recommended as waterproofing material.

If you do choose a do-it-yourself waterproofing method, opt for the application of a rubberized liquid membrane, which is essentially the same material that automobile tires are made of. The liquid membrane is quick drying, inexpensive and generally easy to apply with a roller, sprayer or trowel. However, particular attention should be paid to consistency during the application.

Black mold
Mold is a good indication that your basement has leakage or condensation problems. If mold exists in your home, your basement may have cracks in the walls or the floor, improperly installed or a lack of footer tiles, leaks from sweating basement pipes and/or basement windows. Black mold grows where there is dampness or water damage and is considered a serious health concern.

When to Consult a Professional
Basement waterproofing can minimize water infiltration and prevent its growth. If mold is a problem, it is best to consult a professional to waterproof your foundation. Other factors to consider are the climate and landscape of the area.

MindMaps of the Future; Online Think Tank Topic

We have all seen the MindMaps that have become so popularized through seminars and their excellent spokesmen, authors and psychological researchers, but it is now time to take these MindMaps to a whole new level and use them to predict behavior mathematically by way of computer and perhaps even use them for AI or Artificial Intelligent Computer programming.

Now then here are my thoughts to put mathematics to your MindMap. First I need to help you visualize my concept. By making your MindMap a wheel (for now, later a sphere) where along the circumference are all the branches and sub-branches of the MindMap and rolling moving it along a line we can record the data.

With each point of the decision-making process a symbol of numerical importance or a "skip". A skip is when you do not wish to consider an issue or that data point of accumulated "knowledge" or "experience" in the XML digital library. The line is folded or stair stepped to prevent its use. But could be unfolded later if you wish to use it, if the output answer is not pleasing to the human team of thinkers?

When might the answer be appropriate or undesirable? Well, a decision such as "Nuke All of the Middle East" to have peace on Earth in the future, maybe the decision made by the human, system AI computer in such a case is absolutely right, but we know cannot go there. So, unfold the line and re-look at more data points, which might allow for another outcome.

Thus in using my stair step method you would end up at the finish point or answer to the question at a different level. The levels would be the total sum of the scenario, thus you could stack the potential answers and choose the most favorable. Then take that answer against the next set of questions and therefore you would progress in time and track all the decision making process for the humans. These are my preliminary thoughts. Of course as the operator of an Online Think Tank of course I am open to others in 2007.

Increase of Extreme Weather Due to Global Warming

Global warming is one of the most dangerous challenges that all of humanity has ever faced. Its multiple effects will cause disruptions in everything from natural habitat to drinking water and food supply. And even more dangerously, it will give birth to some of the most powerful natural disasters ever known to mankind.

In 2004, the Tsunami in Asia displayed an unforgiving act of nature. Less than a year later, across continents in the United States, Hurricane Katrina delivered a blow of equal magnitude. Both the disasters caused massive humanitarian crisis, effecting hundreds of thousands of lives. These might not have been directly caused by global warming, but it certainly paints a picture of thing to come.

In India, the speed of cyclones in the Andra Pradesh region has jumped from an average of 150 kilometres per hours to 250 kph within just six years! And while some cities are at a risk of being washed out, other are at the risk of drying up.

Global warming will cause parts of the world to be very fertile for a period of time but simultaneously, it will also cause droughts in other parts. Scientists have estimated that as much as half a million people in Asia could face starvation within the next 30-40 years at this rate.

But its not just these devastating disasters that hint towards whats happening with our weather. Summers are becoming hotter by the year, and this winter Ski resorts in Central America, Europe and the United States all lost business because it just hadnt snowed like it used to even last year! For the first time in over a hundred years, Central Park in New York saw no snow in December 2006.

With global warming, extreme weather or freak weather is becoming a part of daily life. June and July alone has witnessed massive floods in the UK and parts of the United States, while in other parts of the United States heat has caused dangerous forest fires. And this week, the west coast is expected to hit temperatures in triple digits!

There is little argument that global warming is real and it causes changes in our weather pattern. Every week, scientists find more startling and disturbing evidence to support this fact. And the scientific community is trying everything from simple steps to cut carbon emission en masse, to designing colossal artificial air purifiers for earth. This time, its for the sake of our planet.

Is it Worth the Cost to Make a Home More energy -Efficient?

Making a home more energy-efficient will be worth the investment, especially over time. Not only will you be doing your part for the environment, you could save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on utility bills over the years you stay in your home. And, an energy-efficient home is much easier to sell when the time comes.

You might not want to just launch an effort to make your home more energy-efficient in one fell swoop, but as you make repairs, do upgrades and maybe do a little remodeling, the small additional costs will be recouped faster than you might expect. After all, some of the things you can do to make your home more energy efficient dont cost much at all, especially if you are upgrading anyway.

For example, adding weather stripping to doors and windows will probably cost you less than $50. You could save more than that in the next year in reduced energy bills because your home is losing less heated or cooled air. Installing window film on your east- and west-facing windows will probably cost you less than $100 if you do it and less than $250 if you have a professional do the job. It will reduce your heating and cooling bills and prevent fading of your carpet and furniture caused by intense sunlight saving more than your investment in one or 2 years.

Switching from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs will cost you a little more when you first buy the bulbs, but you will save on electricity and you will replace the bulbs far less frequently.

Adding storm doors and windows will save on both heating and cooling costs by reducing the amount of conditioned air that is lost and reducing the amount of outside air that sneaks in. If your budget is tight, you can try doing what our grandfathers did when they wanted storm windows make you own storm windows. You just need a little lumber, a few nails and some heavy plastic.

If you are replacing appliances, it is worth it to insist on energy-efficient models and options, such as vent-free moisture sensing dryers, front loading washers, and refrigerators with through-the-door ice and water. If you are replacing a water heater, an attic fan or a heating/cooling system, you can certainly buy replacements that are more energy-efficient. You might replace your water heater with either instant water heaters or a solar water heater; replace an electric attic fan with a solar-powered fan. Replace your heating and cooling equipment with a single, energy-efficient heat pump. To really save, try choosing a programmable zoned system with timers that allow you to control the temperature in various parts of the house according to your familys needs. Replacing a toilet? Choose a dual-flush toilet to save water usage.

When it is time to replace your roof, choose a metal roof for your replacement. Metal roofs are less expensive and very energy-efficient. If you dont want a metal roof, you can always install attic foil to prevent heat loss.

All of these options are great choices, both for the environment and for your family. But dont forget to look for possible rebates and tax breaks.

Many utility companies offer rebates to customers who install energy-efficient appliances and lights. Just give your utility company a call and ask. Then be sure you understand the standards to qualify for the rebates.

If you install a whole-house voltage surge suppressor or disaster-proof features, be sure to check with your insurance company to see if you will be entitled to any reduction in your insurance rates.

Investigate energy-efficient financing for your upgrades if you are making your home more energy-efficient. Check on FHA energy -Efficient Mortgages, FHA Section 203(k) Rehabilitation Mortgage Insurance, etc.

And dont forget the opportunities to save on your taxes.

If you will use a remodeled or added room as a home office, be sure to deduct the appropriate percentage of utilities, etc. each year as a business expense.

Get to know the U.S. energy Policy Act of 2005. It allows homeowners to take tax credits for remodeling that improves the energy efficiency of your primary residence. The maximum credit you can take is $500, but you can take credits for:

10% of cost up to $500 for energy-efficient exterior door or storm doors
10% of cost up to $500 for a qualified metal roof
10% of cost up to $500 for adding insulation expected to last at least 5 years
$300 for qualified central air conditioning, heat pumps or geothermal heat pumps
up to $150 for a qualified gas, oil or propane furnace or hot water boiler
up to $300 for a qualified gas, oil, propane or electric heat pump water heater
up to $2,000 for solar water heating

Making your home more energy-efficient can be good for the environment, good for your family (and your wallet), and good for the resale value of your home. Do your research and shop carefully when you are making upgrades in your home. Going green will usually pay for itself within 5 to 10 years in reduced energy bills.

If The Earth's Second Moon Is Cruithne Then Who Were The Cruithne?

The Cruithne were an ancient people who are occasionally mentioned in historical Irish sources, who lived within the British Isles during the Iron Age, arriving about 800 and 500 B.C. They were a matrilineal people, tracing royal lineage and inheritance through the female line and in pagan times had worshiped the mother-goddess of fertility.

By historical times they had come to reckon descent patrilineally, by the male line, hence their traditional descent from Conall Cearnach (Conall of the Victories), one of the legendary heroes from early Irish literature. Such Gaelic ancestral heroes, being the ultimate ancestors of all the ethnic groups of Gaeldom, are euhemerized deities (gods made flesh) from the ancient Celtic Otherworld of preChristian times. Conall Cearnach is ultimately a male-manifestation of Brigid (later St. Brigid), the original mother-goddess of the Cruithne

According to T. F. ORahillys historical model, the Cruithne were descended from the Priteni, who ORahilly argues were the first Celtic group to inhabit the British Isles, and identifies with the Picts of Scotland. They settled in Britain and Ireland between 700 and 500 BCE. They used iron and spoke a P-Celtic language, calling themselves Priteni or Pritani, which is the origin of the Latin word Britannia and the Old English words Briton and British.

More recent theories, supported by archaeological evidence, suggest that the Cruithne were a pre-Celtic people, and may have spoken a non-Indo-European language before the spread and dominance of Celtic culture in the British Isles. It is also suggested that these people were the descendants of the aboriginal Neolithic people of the isles.

Around 50 BCE Diodorus wrote of those of the Pretani who inhabit the country called Iris (Ireland). The first reference to the name Pict is found in a Latin document dated 297 CE. It should be noted that Pytheas in about 325 BCE is credited with first recording the local name of the islands, in Greek as Prettanike - apparently in connection with the Cornish region - which Diodorus later rendered Pretannia.

In Britain these Priteni were absorbed by later invaders and lost their cultural identity except in the far north where they were known to the Romans as Picti, or painted people, on account of their practice of decorating their bodies with paint or tattoos (a practice which by then had died out among other Celtic tribes). In Ireland, too, the Priteni were largely absorbed by later settlers; but a few pockets of them managed to retain a measure of cultural, if not political, independence well into the Christian era. By then they were identified as Cruithne, P-Celtic linguistic descendants of the Priteni.

Among the Cruthnian tribes that survived were the Loges (The Loigis were commonly referred to as the Seven Septs of Leix. There were several families of this tribe in historical times, including the OMores, ONolans, ODorans, OLawlors and ODowlings) and the Fothairt ( The Fothairt, or Fotharta, were mercenary tribes of the Laigin and possibly of Cruithin (Pict) origin. They were likely allies of the Ui Bairrche, explaining why they were also split into two major groups: the Fothairt in Chairn (alias Fothar Tre, barony of Forth, Co. Wexford) and the Fothairt of Mag Fea (barony of Forth, Co. Carlow. In historical times the OMores were the leaders of the Fothairt of Mag Fea).

The name of the first of these tribes - modernized as Laois - has been revived and given to one of the counties of Leinster (formerly known as Queens County as a result of an attempted colonist plantation). By this stage in the 16th century the Cruithne were fully integrated into Gaelic Ireland and were indistinguishable from their neighbours.

How To Keep Your Windows Computer Tuned Up

There is a widely held view in the world of Windows Computer Users that the best way to keep a Windows computer clean and running well is to periodically reinstall Microsoft Windows on that computer.

Well, it is true that doing this will indeed keep the computer running well, but only by accepting the substantial downside of complete reinstalls; you have to spend the time to reinstall the OS, then reinstall all your packages, then reconfigure your settings, then reinstall all your data. And, if you are not careful about backups or if you happen to make a mistake along the way, you will lose data. Particularly in the case of a machine that is used to support a business, this risk is simply unacceptable.

The fact is that it is almost never necessary to reinstall Microsoft Windows. Here at Just So Software, we have a laptop which sees heavy use that runs Windows XP Professional, and that laptop is on its third hard drive - and we have NEVER reinstalled Windows XP on it in the more than six years we have had it, even when recovering from a failing hard drive.

While recovering a complete environment from a failing hard drive is not something most people are capable of doing, everyone IS capable of doing the routine maintenance necessary to keep Microsoft Windows running well.

This maintenance consists of periodically running chkdsk, periodically defragmenting the hard drive, keeping up with security updates, and periodically cleaning out hard drive detritus (using the cleanup tool that Windows provides). Beyond that, keep your firewall in place and working, do not use Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, periodically scan for spyware and periodically scan for viruses (I do not even use an active virus checker anymore; I just periodically scan using Trend Micro's Housecall and nothing ever turns up due to my other protocols).

Beyond that - and this is VERY important - keep an eye on what processes are running and what is scheduled to start when the system does. Many software packages you might install (shareware OR commercial) will start things you do not want and do not need, and will make them run at startup. This is an important cause of Windows system slowdown as the system ages. For example, both Quicktime and Realplayer shovel the startup junk at you when you install them. Keep an eye on what is set to start up, and take out the trash.

In this series of articles, I will take you through the details of actually performing this maintenance. By doing these things routinely, you will protect your system against the "bit rot" and slowdowns that plague Windows computers and cause many people to reinstall Windows.

Thatch Roofing Shingles

Traditionally speaking, thatch roofs were the ultimate roofing choice for making one's home look cozy, ethnic, or even tropical. The making of thatch roofs hails back to prehistoric times when early men had started building their huts and covered them with thatched roofs typically made out of straw, reed, or grass.

Over the years of course, original thatch roofs have lost out in a big way to faux or synthetic thatch shingles that have flooded the market. The idea is to experience the joys of a traditional thatch roofs without the disadvantages that one might have faced while using it in its original form.

Going by recent trends, there are a number of synthetic thatch shingles available, made mostly out polythene fibers that come with a strong U.V. resistant guarantee. These fibers are carefully blended with a thin but tough waterproofing membrane and can protect the owner from the elements quite effectively. Manufacturers provide warranties against color fastness, decay, and rot.

The polythene fibers used to make the shingles are actually tiny plastic particles and a polyurethane-binding strip is used to bond these particles and form a shingle. These can be easily used on any existing roof for a very low installation cost. Although expert professional advice is always welcome, owners can install these thatch shingles themselves without much trouble.

These shingles come in shades of yellow and gold to give a natural straw-look. Brownish-green shades are also available that give the shingle a palm-appearance and reminds one of tropical islands.

Outside the United States, thatch shingles have become very popular in South Africa. Thatch shingles like the ones that have a bamboo or eucalyptus lath finish are becoming increasingly popular.

These synthetic shingles can be installed not only on high-slope roofs but also on low-slope ones. With life expectancy of a minimum of fifty years, these shingles create a perfect blend of nostalgia and modernity.

Balancing a Ceiling Fan

While the advantages of installing ceiling fans throughout your home are numerous, most homeowners who use these attractive, energy saving appliances, usually experience a problem that is variously described as wobbling or lack of proper balance.

Consider the basic anatomy of the ceiling fan. Its a rotating set of blades that can usually be adjusted for the speed desired for proper cooling or heat circulation. As such, each blade must be angled the same and, most importantly, must weigh the same. The most frequent cause of ceiling fan wobbling is that one or more blades differ in weight.

A properly balanced fan rotates smoothly and provides the greatest efficiency of airflow. The culprit, when it comes to an unbalanced unit, is usually time and use. Like most everything mechanical, the ceiling fan is subject to efficiency problems after extensive use. When a fan is out of balance the motor works harder, reducing its efficiency and increasing electrical usage. In addition, unbalanced fans tend to be noisy and typically produce a cyclical sound that can be quite irritating when youre trying to sleep or carry on a conversation.

Fortunately, correcting the problem is usually a fairly simple, inexpensive and straightforward proposition.

The first thing to check is the attachment of each blade to its respective holder. Ceiling fan blades are attached with screws (usually three) and the problem may be as simple as tightening any of the screws that have come loose over time. If you find this to be the case, after tightening the loose screws, run the fan and see if the problem has been solved.

If not, the next thing to try is switching blades that are across from each other. After switching one set, turn the fan on and see if the wobbling has stopped. If not, follow the same procedure with another set to see if this solves the problem.

If not, the next thing to check is the angle or alignment of each blade. Use a piece of wood or a yardstick and place it vertically on the outside edge of one of the blades. Manually rotate the blades slowly to make sure that each blade is in alignment. If you notice any blades that are not, carefully bend them up or down until they are in alignment with the other blades. Turn the fan on and see if this solves the problem.

If the problem persists, you have a problem with one or more of the blade weights. Many ceiling fans come with weights that attach to the top of a blade. These are called balancing weights and are used to compensate for differences in blade weights that can occur particularly with wooden blades. Sometimes one of these weights can be accidentally knocked off when the blades are cleaned. If your fan was not supplied with balancing weights, they can be purchased, usually as a kit, in either lighting fixture stores, home centers or in some hardware stores.

These kits are inexpensive and will usually stop the wobbling when the other suggested remedies have failed. Put a balancing weight on one of the blades and then spin the fan by hand. Do this with each blade until you have determined which blade is out of balance. You may find that more than one blade will need a balancing weight.

Move the weight(s) close to the motor and turn the fan on. If there is still a wobble, stop the fan and move the weight(s) further from the motor. As the weight is moved further from the motor, the effect of the weight increases. Continue to experiment until the weight(s) are positioned in such a way that the wobble stops.

Although this process is somewhat time consuming, it will take care of the problem when all else fails. With your ceiling fan back in balance, it will run smoothly and efficiently providing a pleasant cooling effect in the hot summer months and circulating warm air in the cold winter months.

The Reality of Integration in Urban Schools - Nu Leadership Series

Every failure is a blessing in disguise, providing it teaches some needed lesson one could not have learned without it. Most so-called Failures are only temporary defeats.

Napoleon Hill

America has emerged into a big melting pot. Why is it so difficult to deal with integrating Americas schools? Lets review magnet school programs as an example. Some critics suggest that magnet schools increase racial tension thereby decreasing student performance. I would say that it isnt the magnet schools that increase racial tension. I would consider the environment and other external variables. Given the transformation of the nations public schools, American students are enjoying a wealth of diversity. However, magnet schools operate under a strategic fallacy. Lets look closer.

Magnet schools were created to attract suburban kids to poor, urban schools. Magnet schools were a market-driven approach to desegregation as opposed to federal courts and government agencies demanded race-conscious policies (Armor & Rossell, 2001). These mandatory desegregation plans created several issues. For example, many white parents started a massive withdrawal of their children from public schools into private, segregated academies. This resulted in the demise of public schools by withdrawal of crucial financial support. This left the public schools under funded and inferior (Levin, 1999).

By 1986, there were only 3 percent of the nations white school-aged children enrolled in the twenty-five largest urban districts; however, large urban districts are predominately white and middle class (Levin, 1999). Furthermore, whites students of all racial groups, are the most isolated, where more than three quarters (78 percent) of their peers are white. Therefore, many minorities are not exposed to white students than would be expected of the nations public schools (Orfield and Lee, 2006).

Today, blacks and Hispanics comprise 56.1 percent of students in the urban areas (Levin, 1999). Many fear the inner city environment. Therefore, the wealthiest and brightest retreat to the suburbs and other places. Parents, teachers, educators, legislators, and other supports ponder if these problems can be fixed.

Let The Sun Light Your Garden at Night

You don't have to be a tree hugger in order to use solar lightening in your back yard, front yard and garden. Actually, illuminating with solar power has lots of advantages. There is a variety of products and decorations that uses solar power for the outdoor lightening use such as solar security lights, solar garden lights, floating solar lights and solar address signs just to name few.

Outdoor Solar Lights Benefits and Advantages

No wires Since you install your outdoor solar lighting system together, meaning that the solar panels and the lamps located in one place, you don't have to worry about all the wiring from the electricity outlet. It is totally a stand alone system getting its power from the sun.

No usage costs Once you installed your solar lights you have no usage costs since you produce the electricity by yourself. With the solar panels, the battery, the lamp and of course the sun, you have the energy source and your little electricity factory to light your garden.

Clean renewable energy The electricity produced by harnessing the sun light by the solar panels which converts it and store it in batteries for later use. This source of energy is does not pollute the environment and will last as long as the sun is shining.

Reduce your dependency on your local electricity supplier As much as it happens in rare occasions, when it happens, you feel lost. I am talking about failure in the area electricity supply. When there is such a blackout you understand how much your every day activities depends on the electricity provided by your local provider and in order to reduce this dependency, you need to use other sources of energy.

As you can see there are many benefits and advantages while illuminating your outdoors area with solar garden lights

Variations of Alternative Fuels

There are several variations of alternative fuels and several classifications depending on your exact definition. Lets take a closer look.

A fuel is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a substance that is used to produce heat or energy by burning and also a substance from which energy can be liberated such as in a nuclear reaction. When you are discussing the variations of alternative fuels these two classifications can be a good starting point. Fossil fuels fit the first definition. They are burned or consumed in some manner to produce heat or energy. Fossil fuels are considered to be the conventional fuel. Anything other than fossil fuels would be considered as an alternative fuel.

There are many variations of alternative fuels that can be burned or are consumed to produce heat or energy. They include such things as biomass, ethanol, butanol, methane, and even peanut oil. The other definition would refer to the concept of a fuel that simply liberates the energy without consuming the fuel. These variations of alternative fuels would be such things as stored electricity in batteries or wind and solar power. These alternative fuels are also called sustainable or renewable fuels.

In the minds of many people, fuel is associated with motors and engines. Alternative fuels are thought of as non-conventional ways to power these engines. Basically, this means alternatives to gasoline for powering an automobile engine. The same ideas apply here. Some variations of alternative fuels would be burned and consumed as they powered the engine. They would function in the same way as gasoline by providing the explosion inside the combustion engine that drives the pistons.

Other variations of alternative fuels would power the automobile by replacing the need for the internal combustion engine altogether. Solar or electric powered automobile would be examples of this. Solar power or electricity would then be thought of as the "fuel" that is powering the vehicle. The other major uses of fuel are to provide heat or the generation of electricity. Once again, fossil fuels such as oil or coal are burned to directly produce heat or indirectly heat water into steam to power electrical generators. The fossil fuels would be called conventional and anything else would be alternative.

A discussion of the variations of alternative fuels is going to depend on which definition of fuel is being used and to some degree on the mindset of the person having the discussion. To an environmentalist, any fuel that is not renewable is considered conventional. If it has a negative environmental impact, it is not a true alternative.

Remodeling Your House Ideas

Producing A Peaceful Haven With Outside Lighting

Hardly surprising landscape lighting is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most requested services asked of gardening companies. Still, outside lighting is not actually a specialty area that needs extensive knowledge to organize. It is by and large a piece of cake to install and will make a spectacular difference in the appeal of your home after sundown.

Landscape lighting is becoming progressively much used because of the beauty, safety, and security it provides to the outdoor spaces of a home. It is a tremendous way to bring out the exterior beauty of your household's surroundings. Solar outside lighting can add beauty and charm to your household when installed correctly. Out-of-door lighting is ordinarily a prudent decision, but especially around water features, which pose a special danger after dark and is excellent for highlighting areas. Exterior lighting is used to bring trees and plants to life at night, spotlight focal points around your house, light up footpaths and stairs for safety and security. It is normally simple and safe to install, is safe for children and animals, and it consumes less juice than mainline voltage options. As an accessory exterior lighting is as practical as it is cosmetic, increasing the safety and security of any household, since the home owner and family members are able to move around their property in safely after sunset. Exterior lighting is a simple improvement that should make a huge difference in the safety as well as the security of your dwelling as well its visual effect after dark and is safer to control than traditional mains lighting.

This exterior lighting alternative has been advancing in popularity the past few years. One problem with solar outdoor lighting is that you may not feel it is very effective because they produce very little light and get dimmer as the battery runs out. Yet most solar lighting can be as bright as traditional low-voltage. Solar exterior lighting stores energy captured during the day and then when it becomes dark enough, the outdoor lighting switches on automatically. Solar exterior lighting can be purchased in a mixture of styles from diverse producers offering solar outdoor decor that suit your style.

An additional benefit of solar outside lighting is that it is a breeze to install, and the installer wouldn't have to dig beneath their walk to run wires. One probable problem is that they often only give off a faint glow that lights a relatively small area. Landscape lighting is the ideal application for solar powered, wireless style lights. However, they must be placed in an area, which gets a lot of sunlight during sunny periods. Solar powered lighting systems do not require any wiring nor do they involve any transformers. All the same, the PV panel used to charge the battery must be in an area where it will receive plenty of direct sunlight. Now that manufacturing systems have improved and prices are dropping, solar lighting has become the red hot product in the garden industry. It is a fast simple option that can transform your garden decor or landscape. Solar exterior lighting supplies many options for you to incorporate into your gardening project including pathway, driveway lights, accent lights, lanterns, fountains, and spotlights.

As with the majority of electrical products, landscape lighting can be manipulated by intelligent switches, in particular timers. By utilising sensors and controllers you can avoid power wastage by your landscape lighting. Preparing the footings for lighting fixtures, setting up of fixtures, or installation of empty conduit for future landscape lighting are chores that ought to be considered ahead of installing your outside lighting.

Glyco Nutrients & Stem Cell Production

During the speach, Dr. Reg McDaniel talked about first seeing new stem cells in the peripheral blood of clients using glyconutrients many years ago and not recognizing these cells as stem cells. They were 10 times the size of white blood cells and they were given the name "Gee" cells for some time as that's what Dr. Reg said when he observed these new cells that no one could identify! Now we have the tools to identify these cells appropriately as stem cells which can be used as "master keys" to move to places in the body as the body calls for. About a year ago there was an article in JAMA regarding the stem cells implants of male cells into female bodies of women with leukemia who had received a stem cell transplant. When these women died, male marked cells were found as neurons in the brain.

Dr. Reg realized that this might offer an explanation in the many children with fetal alcohol syndrome that were doing so well with the glyconutrients and others who had advanced so far beyond their perceived genetic limitations. He told the story of several adopted aboriginal children in Canada who had fetal alcohol syndrome who have done remarkably well, improving from IQ's estimated to be around 50 to levels around 100. One girl who had difficulties with reading and numbers and was in remedial classes after 3 years with glyconutrients was able to read a Harry Potter book in a week and discuss what she had read.

When they measure the before and after stem cell counts in the blood, virtually none are detectable prior to glyconutrieints. Within a week of giving glyconutrients, there are 200-400 stem cells seen in a microliter of blood with about 5-10 thousand white blood cells. If one extrapolates to the whole body, it is possible that there are 1.7-3 trillion new stem cells throughout our body as we add in glyconutrients. We're at the beginning of understanding all of what is possible with stem cells. There is an article in the June Scientific American if you want to read more about stem cells.

A New STEM CELL SURVEY CD for the Health Care Professional will be available next week that contains evidence that glyconutrients increase Stem Cell activity in the human body (This is a presentation CD not an audio CD). This NEW Stem Cell CD by H. Reg McDaniel, M.D. documents how glyconutrients integrated into traditional therapy may benefit every disease that Stem Cells benefit and THAT IS EVERY DISEASE.

You may request the CD online at http://www.results4kids.org for a $50 donation. Proceeds are split 50/50 with Fisher Institute for Medical Research and the Results Endowment for Medical and Educational Research. These organizations are seeking major funding for Stem Cell Research using glyconutrients. Education Lite - Feels Good But Less Filling

The difficulty is not that children dont learn to read, write and do arithmetic very well it is that kids dont learn at all the way schools insist on teaching. John Taylor Gatto

Parents are dissatisfied with the public schools today because the schools do not offer what parents want. In fact, the systems purpose is the opposite of what parents want for their kids. It's called Education Lite, or Dumbing Down, and the process includes parents and the public, not just teachers and children.

First is the annual concern about low scores on the standardized tests. Every year, the number of children who pass the Mastery reading and math combined is about thirty percent statewide. Thats a seventy percent failure rate. And what (joke) are we told every year by Education officials?, The public schools are performing well. Who believes it? Mastery tests are not about mastery. They should be called Mediocrity tests. As poor as the results are, there is even reason to suspect that the results are fudged at the state level as well as at local levels.

If the schools were interested in having students learn basic skills, they could teach them, and to all the children, not just some. There are reading and math methods that work. Homeschoolers know and use them, as do private schools. But public schools use methods that are certain to fail a majority of students. Why is this so? Because the system is designed to turn out a mass of dependent employees, soldiers and consumers, not independent creative-thinking individuals. If we want education, we must find out how to acquire it; but if we want mediocrity, its all paid for by our taxes and its right down the street. Its Education Lite; it may feel good, but its less filling.

For example: reading. If the schools had the goal of teaching reading correctly, they could, and virtually all the children would learn to read well by third grade. The simple method is called phonics. With it, many children would learn to read well in a week since its principles are easy to teach and understand. But the schools refuse to use phonics, the method that works.

In math, the public schools use fuzzy math. One such program is called Everyday Math. It is called fuzzy math because it doesnt teach the basics on which advanced math depends. In other words, it simply wastes time. I would add that if the purpose is merely math appreciation, as some claim, then its not education; its therapy. How many can enter a trade or profession or even balance a checkbook without knowing the simple facts of arithmetic? How can they learn advanced subjects if they dont know how to read and calculate well? How can they make informed choices or lead productive lives without those tools? There is no way.

The quality of teachers is also declining. Heres the president of the American Federation of Teachers, Sandy Feldman: You have in the schools, among the teachers who are retiring, very smart peoplebut were not getting in now the same kinds of people. She admits that many of her union members are not very smart people. Add to that the words of Abigail and Stephan Thernstrom from their 2003 book, No Excuses, [The] structure and culture of public education drive away those who might serve young kids best.

Most statements by school employees and officials include the message, "We are working for the children. However, more and more, it looks to many people as though the schools are organized for the benefit and convenience of the employees, not the children at all. Education Lite is what the government schools serve today. Can citizens do anything about it? The survival of our country depends on the answer.

All About RFIDSystems For Pharmaceutical Distributors And The FDA Regulations

The US FDA has decided to implement the "Pedigree provisions" of the Prescription Drugs Marketing Act after December 2006, when the current stay on it expires. There is a lot of concern that many pharmaceutical supply chain participants, may not be able to meet this deadline and hence risk non compliance with the provisions of the act. This pharmaceutical article is excerpts from the RFID technology white papers written by Sangeeta of Abhisam Software. The RFID technology white papers attempts to present an RFID Systems solution to ensure timely compliance and get added side benefits in the process.

Problems with the present pharmaceutical supply chain: There are two major problems with the present pharmaceutical supply chain model of the pharma industry, as it exists today. The first one is not of counterfeiting, but of diversion. More details will be explained in in the background information below and in Sangeeta's RFID technology white papers, but some highlights are below.

Drug diversions can be of two types. Drugs meant for Medicare or Medicaid programs, public hospitals or charitable institutions, are diverted to the open market. Unscrupulous persons sell prescription drugs or "controlled" substances to consumers, without proper prescriptions. Counterfeiting (by FDA definition) Dummies/ Placebos, which means that there is no active ingredient at all Products with a lesser quantity of active ingredient than stated Products with the wrong active ingredient Products with a packaging that wrongly suggests that it was made by an FDA approved manufacturer To give you an idea of the scale of the counterfeiting just one of these cases involves $42 million of counterfeit Lipitor. Other high value cases include a case involving a $200 million nationwide drug diversion conspiracy and a $45 million Medicaid fraud involving diversion of blood products.

The FDA's solution to the problem: The FDA's vision of a safe and secure pharmaceutical supply chain is based on transparency and accountability by all participants in the (prescription drugs) pharmaceutical supply chain. The FDA had nominated a task force to study whether this system could be implemented with the currently available state of the technology.

They came to this conclusion after studying the various technologies currently commercially available, which could meet the pedigree requirements, including RFID or Radio Frequency Identification technology. Amongst all technologies studied including bar coding, RFID seemed to be the most promising and the committee felt that the pedigree requirement could be met by easily leveraging something that is readily available. (More details in the complete RFID technology white paper "RFID-FDA-Regulations.pdf" referenced below)

How the pharma companies can approach this issue: The million dollar question is "Who can ensure an ROI on this RFID technology, especially after millions have already been spent?" Even if a full scale RFID implementation were done now, how can it be done fast, before the December 2006 deadline?

Rather than resist implementation of a pedigree system built on RFID systems , pharmaceutical supply chain participants must realistically estimate the costs of investment in the technology, the real cost of counterfeits and the returns on a foolproof RFID based "track and trace" system. The RFID systems will virtually eliminate the counterfeit pharmaceutical market at one go. Secondly, it can ensure that drug recalls can be done swiftly without any ambiguity. This has been demonstrated many a times. Thirdly, the RFID systems need not cost too much.

How wholesalers and traders can implement track and trace: Ditto for other pharmaceutical supply chain intermediaries. They can simply join the same global system outlined in the RFID technology white paper that is currently in place and implement the electronic pedigree system easily. The only investment would be in the RFID readers and middleware. Even these can be bought in bulk by their associations at negotiated prices and implemented. This solves the issue of RFID standards too, since all participants would be using similar kinds of RFID readers and RFID software.

Beneficial Side effects of the implementation: In addition to combating pharmaceutical counterfeiting and diversion, pharmaceutical wholesalers, traders and retailers, get the added benefit of looking into their businesses and track the movement of prescription drugs with full transparency. This will no doubt yield added benefits of inventory optimization, demand forecasting and increasing their knowledge of what is selling and how fast.

RFID Implementation issues:

To implement this system fast, before the deadline of December approaches, it is essential to train all stakeholders (pharmaceutical company personnel, wholesalers, traders, retailers and others) fast but, at a competitive cost. However, the present cost of classroom based training is expensive, besides having other related costs like travel and hotel stay. A better system would be to go for a vendor-neutral e-learning program, which can be deployed immediately and across several locations simultaneously.

This has the effect of bringing up all staff, to a level necessary for them to implement an RFID based pedigree system. The e-learning program should cover all aspects of the RFID technology including the history, advantages over traditional automatic identification like bar codes, practical RFID systems, RFID standards and middleware as well as other issues like RFID privacy and RFID security. It should ideally also offer a self assessment and a glossary. We believe, that deploying such a program, across many companies is the only option to effectively train hundreds of people, in a cost-effective manner, so that the actual implementation of the system can be done smoothly. It is essential to bring all people on board, make them understand this RFID technology better and only then talk of implementing it.

Conclusion:

RFID track and trace is a technology whose time has come. It not only will meet the FDA requirements for compliance but also prevent pharmaceutical counterfeiting (lost opportunity sales of genuine drugs), prevent diversion, optimize pharmaceutical supply chains as well as fulfill social responsibilities of the pharmaceutical industry fraternity.

Training large numbers of people in a short time, is not a problem at all since a vendor-neutral, technology and implementation focused e-learning program is now easily available.

Some Additional Background Information ...

Pharmaceutical distributors Background : The Prescription Drug Marketing Act (PDMA) was signed as a law, as far back as 1998 but a number of amendments introduced later, finalized the pedigree requirements only in 1999.

The pharmaceutical industry, essentially requesting them to the act "put on hold" , citing several reasons for this, one of them being "the technology required for this system is unproven and not in place." The FDA patience finally wore thin. Therefore it was decided that they will allow the current stay on this act, to expire in December 2006.

This may not be a big problem for the pharmaceutical manufacturers, but it could be a really big problem for supply chain intermediaries like distributors, pharmaceutical wholesale suppliers and traders, who may not know much about "electronic track and trace" technology, which is necessary for the compliance. Sangeeta's RFID technology white paper attempts to explain how this RFID track and trace system can be implemented and how it will be beneficial in the long run to all sections of society- pharmaceutical companies as well as intermediaries and ultimately the end users.

Understanding the pharmaceutical supply chain: The lay reader may assume that it is like any other supply chain, which brings goods from the manufacturers' factories to the retail shelves, but it is not so. The pharmaceutical supply chain is inherently different in its organization. For the pharmaceutical business, the pricing for each end user is different. Therefore a typical hospital gets these drugs at lower rates than does a corner pharmacy. There are programs like Medicare and Medicaid where the procurement prices are different than for someone who buys the same drug at a corner pharmacy. The pharmaceutical distributors diagram to the right shows some of the various flows of prescription drugs through the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Technophobia and the Dinosaur

Technical dinosaurs are decreasing in numbers and might soon be in danger of extinction. Firstly, let me define a technical dinosaur. Anyone who shows revulsion for a computer might be termed as a technodino - sometimes outright hostility surfaces, especially when confronted with problematic situations where only a computer can solve the difficulty. The sufferer might even start rolling eyes at the ceiling, walking in circles whilst keeping arms tightly folded across the chest, or shouting oh f------g hell at the top of their lungs.

Such attacks are frequently experienced in banks, supermarket checkouts, airport terminals, private homes and places of work where central accounting is rendered useless in the event of a power cut.

Some technodinos display curious behavior when confronted with DVD players, mobile telephones or MP3 players. Tutting, swearing, chair-kicking and door slamming are common symptoms of an attack. The elderly fall into a high risk category when required to program a DVD into a television or set a play list onto an MP3. Invariably the services of the resident four year old grandchild are called upon, and the situation is rectified within about three minutes.

Feelings of inadequacy accompanied by physical nausea then set in, as the dino retires to his or her study/kitchen/bedroom to recover from the effects of exposure to technical ability, sometimes accompanied by the derisive laughter of said four year old.

A recent survey highlighted that 98% of housewives only utilize 30% of available gadgets and hi tech features on household appliances because they are unable to adequately interpret instructions on how to operate the other 70%. Of the 1000 ladies surveyed, 200 expressed no interest whatever in learning about new gadgets, 400 were satisfied with the performance of their equipment but preferred to upgrade annually, 250 made their husbands do the housework and the rest were alcoholics.

The most successful lifestyle available to technodinos is to actively seek to cohabit with another sub species known as a technowizard, a creature of equally debilitating habits. The two conditions tend to compliment each other admirably, rather like Jack Spratt and his wife. The technowizard is definitely the more dominant, hence the imminent extinction of the weaker species.

Role of Information Technology

The flow of information has changed the way we live in today world. Information is the backbone of every system. Every morning when we read a newspaper having out so much information we came to know the latest happening in the world (of course in details), yeah you are right even the internet edition also. This is just a very basic example of IT.

All our Railways, Air and even sea networks are connected with the help of IT. The information is very vital for running these smoothly. Even if we have do not have information for one minute it may result into a big disaster.

We can take the example of banking. It is very to transact any amount of money from part of the world to other with help of e-commerce. We can purchase anything online with help of debit and credit cards. This has made our lives more and more simple.

Now days if we want to buy to something and are not getting it nearby store then we can simply search for that thing on internet and then order it on the internet. We will get it delivered at our doorstep with just few clicks of mouse.

Similarly if we want to travel around the world we can book airline tickets online and even book rooms for our hotels (of course at competitive rates).

People are working on the internet without really having to go outside to their workplace.

IT has changed the whole scenario.
Companies can share technologies online
Even the doctors can guide the other doctors while operating on a patient with the help of Information Technology.
A whole new world is coming in our way.
We love IT.

Torchieres are Elegant and Space Saving Light Fixtures

The torchiere is a lighting fixture that has gained much popularity over the last ten or so years, with its slim elegant design and availability in a wide range of prices, it's easy to see why. For those not familiar with the torchiere, they are a close relative of the floor lamp but with a few discernable differences. Torchieres are generally characterized by a very thin column that rises up from some sort of weighted base. Most stand around six-feet tall and have light diffusers or shades that force light upwards, as opposed to lamps which shine downwards. This is probably the key characteristic of the torchiere.

Torchieres are fairly versatile, as they can pretty much work in any room in your home. They are most widely used in living rooms and bedrooms but they don't look out of place in dining rooms and home offices either. The slim torchiere is ideal for so many rooms because of its space-saving design. With floor and table lamps, one needs to worry about the size of the base and the size of the lampshade. There are none of these worries with torchieres.

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, the torchiere is available in every price range. Stores ranging from your neighborhood Target or Wal-Mart to higher end retailers like Restoration Hardware all carry some form of the torchiere. You can spend as little as $20-$30 for a cheapie basic model or into the thousands for a torchiere made from finer materials with a more elaborate look.

In pretty much all cases, a torchiere provides more ambient light than a standard lamp, sometimes up to 20% more light. The reason for this is the upward facing shades mentioned in the first paragraph. Light will hit a standard height ceiling and be diffused over a greater area than light from a table or floor lamp, which is forced downwards and often blocked.

Switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Right Now!

Okay, first off, let me preface this article by saying that I just watched An Inconvenient Truth and, in some small part, this is my very feeble attempt at trying to do my part to help the environment.

In that same vein, if this article can help you save a couple of bucks at the same time, then I definitely feel like I've done my job!

Anyway, today I'm going to encourage you to go ahead and switch from your regular incandescent light bulbs. Lately, a lot has been made of these relatively new bulbs - so much so, that the California State Legislature is looking to pass a bill that would outlaw the sale of regular incandescent light bulbs within the next decade.

So why all the fuss? Well, according to energy star.gov"> energy star.gov:

"If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR [compact fluorescent bulb], we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gasses equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars."

That's some pretty serious stuff for just one simple light bulb. But what does all of that mean for you? It means you can do your part to help the environment and potentially save hundreds of dollars doing so.

According to energy star.gov, you will save nearly $30 in energy costs for each incandescent light bulb you switch out with a compact fluorescent bulb. And, because the compact fluorescent bulbs last longer than regular bulbs, the extra $2 or you have to spend for each bulb is essentially a wash due to the fact you won't have to replace the compact fluorescent nearly as often as you do the regular bulb.

But now I'm ready to talk some serious numbers - I went around my house today and I counted the number of light bulbs I currently have, and I came up with a total of 48 bulbs. That means that if I were to switch out all 52 regular bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, over their lifetime I would save roughly $1,500 in energy costs.

And on that note, this weekend I'm going to go swing by Wal-Mart or Costco and buy some compact fluorescent bulbs in bulk and begin to put them in my light fixtures and lamps once the regular bulbs start to burn out.

I'll gladly throw down $60 in light bulbs if the return is $1,500! Oh yeah, and I'll be doing my part to help the environment, too!

An Introduction to Brick Building

Fired clay bricks remain one of the most enduring building materials known to the world wide building industry. Some might argue that it is also one of the most beautiful and that it adds character to any building with its colour, strength and texture. Clay brick dates as far back as the Egyptian age and connects us with the history of our ancestors.

Being such a versatile building material and because of its very good climatic characteristics, it remains the material of choice for residential buildings in South Africa. Bricks have an excellent fire rating, it is weatherproof and has really good acoustic properties and is almost soundproof, and best of all it amount to only about 10 per cent of the total cost of a typical residential building. Homebuyers will almost always prefer to buy a house constructed out of clay brick as it does not deteriorate over time and has a higher resale value.

Bricks vary quite significantly in because of the diverse manufacturing processes and types of clay used in their manufacture in various regions. Often potential home builders make the mistake in thinking that all bricks are the same and there is no need to shop around for different finishes and colours. This can be costly as the quality of different brick manufacturers vary considerably as will also be reflected in the price. A very cheap brick might be of un-even size or may warp making building with them a lot more difficult.

Face brick

The use of face brick is often used in residential architecture for its low maintenance properties and often the aesthetics is overlooked completely. Face brick can be very aesthetically pleasing with its rustic look and a good architect might combine face brick with plastered areas to come to more a balanced aesthetic as face brick in its single form can be a bit overwhelming. When opting to build with face brick make sure you appoint a good builder with a good face brick portfolio as the jointing of a face brick wall can make or break the aesthetic of this type of construction. Also make sure you order sufficient bricks the first time as, because it being a natural material can vary noticeably per batch.

Cement bricks

These bricks are similar to a clay stock (plaster) brick but are more often used in regions where clay might be in short supply. There is usually not a big price difference between cement and clay plaster bricks and cement brick is mostly used as a substitute. When ordering cement bricks make sure that they are properly cured and dry before using them. If more that 5 per cent breaks upon delivery, have a knowledgeable person check the quality of the bricks.

Plaster (Stock) bricks

Cheaper than face bricks, a plaster brick still is manufactured to high standards to ensure uniformity of size and structure, but have to be plastered and painted thereby cancelling out the cost saving and has to be maintained at fairly regular intervals. Often great aesthetics can be achieved by combining plastered walls with face brick walls.

Solar energy Overview

Solar energy is a renewable, clean energy that has been around for thousands of years in one form or another. Following is an overview of solar energy.

Solar energy Overview

Solar energy is all about harnessing the power of the sun to produce energy. The sun rains enough solar energy on the Earth in one day to power the entire energy needs of the world for one year. Solar energy is considered a renewable energy source because it will exist for as long as our sun does, estimated to be another 4.5 billion years. Solar energy is also considered a clean energy because it does not produce pollutants or byproducts harmful to the environment.

Solar energy was the first energy source used by mankind. Of course, the use was limited to drying things and heating caused by direct contact, but it was a use. In modern times, solar energy has been a power source since the early 1950s, but was not widespread due to technological issues which rendered it an ineffective and expensive energy source. With technology advancements, solar energy is moving to the forefront as a potential alternative to fossil fuels.

The future is indeed bright for solar energy as new solar nanotechnology is close to creating solar platforms that boggle the mind. For instance, a few companies are trying to create solar quantum dots, which will be mixed in the paint you use for your home. Yes, you will actually paint on solar energy panels that will power your home

Currently, solar energy is produced primarily through the use of solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells. The process works by placing the cells in direct sunlight. Sun hits the cells causing a chemical reaction that creates an electric current. The current is then turned into electricity. The problem with these cells, however, is they are only about 15 percent efficient.

Solar energy is typically classified in two ways, passive solar and active solar. Both approaches produce solar energy, but in very different ways

Passive solar is exactly what it sounds like. It does not involve panel systems or other moving mechanisms to produce solar energy. Instead, passive solar involves planning a structure in such a way as to capture the power of the sun with windows, tanks and so on. These systems can be used to heat homes, water and so on.

Active solar energy systems typically involve some form of solar panels. The panels are oriented to maximize exposure to the sun. Depending on the system, the panels will then either directly convert sunlight to electricity, which is then transformed from direct current electricity to alternate current electricity and stored in batteries or fed into the grid system of the local utility. Active systems are more expensive and complex.

Solar energy has numerous advantages over other energy platforms. It is produces no pollution, requires little maintenance and comes with significant financial incentives in the form of tax deductions, tax credits and rebates from manufactures. In a majority of states, solar energy can also be sold back to utilities per a concept known as net metering. This reduces the need for batteries and significantly cuts utility bills.

Unfortunately, solar energy has some disadvantages as well. The initial cost of purchase and installation can be expensive. Second, areas with limited sunlight are problematic. Third, solar energy obviously cant be produced at night. Despite these disadvantages, solar energy is a booming energy platform.

The largest producers of solar energy in the world are Germany, Japan and the United States. California has recently introduces a solar initiative devoting over three billion dollars to promoting solar energy use by residents in the state. As this overview demonstrates, the solar energy platform is coming on strong.
